Disappointing morning for Ireland at World Universities
There was double disappointment this morning for Ireland at the World University Championships in Thailand
Both Gary McKenna and Céire Smith were defeated in their quarter finals in Chaing Mai and therefore missed out on guaranteed bronze medals.
Cavan flyweight Smith was overcome by Frenchwoman Wassila Lkhadiri, while Monaghan lightweight McKenna lost out to Kyrgyz fighter Temirian Osmonov.
With their elimination, Ireland’s representation at the seventh edition of the championships shrinks down to just Christina Desmond and Ken Okungbowa, both of whom box tomorrow in the semi finals against Pole Natalia Hollinska and Frenchman Dylan Bregeon respectively.
