Casey crashes out of Euro games in Baku
Limerick flyweight Myles Casey became the third Irish boxer to be eliminated at the European Games after losing to Azeri golden boy, Elvin Mamishzada, in the Last 16.
In what was a well-matched fight, some eyebrows will be raised at the scorecards (29-27, 30-25, and 29-28.) with two judges giving 10-8 scores in favour of the home fighter after a close first two rounds.
Knowing he was behind on the scorecards, Casey came out all guns blazing in the final round and silenced the partisan crowd with a impressive display – but in the end it was not enough to reverse the arrears.
The 21 year old from St Francis’s BC has done himself proud though. Indeed his performances at these Games have shown that he is not out of place at international level and a place at the Rio 2016 Olympics is a realistic and achievable goal.
