Casey comeback cancelled

Willie Casey’s much anticipated September 3 return was unfortunately cancelled today.

‘Big Bang’ was set to make his first appearance since his world title defeat suffered at the gloves of Cuban sensation Guillermo Rigondeaux in hihome town next week, but the Limerick Institute of Technology informed promoter Gary Hyde the venue was no longer available.

The former European champions scheduled bout with former Joe Murray, Patrick Hyland and Scott Quigg foe Daniel Kodjo Sassou is now cancelled as is the entire under card. Hyde claims it was too late to change the venue, but is hopeful of getting the Limerick man a fight on the Tyson Fury September 17 Belfast under card.

The Cork based promoter, who manages Rigondeaux, also stated he will stay true to his promise of getting Casey three fights before the turn of the year.

“I talked to the BUI today and the fight is off.” Hyde told Mirror Sport. “It is not a runner at all. It is too late to change the venue with just a week to go. Myself and Willie are very disappointed. We were really gunning for this show. The fact 50% of the tickets were gone already shows the people of Limerick were too. I am going to talk to Mick Hennessy and try and get Willie on the Fury card. Willie is in top shape and I still plan to get him three fights before Christmas. Those fights might have to be on other cards not promoted by myself though,” Hyde added before explained why the card fell through.

“LIT got onto me and said they had exams that day and the next and it wouldn’t be feasible to run the show. It is disappointing. We offered to pay any cost incurred, but they claim it is impossible and the show is gone.”
