Carl Frampton gives his thoughts on Belfast BoxNation Waterfront Hall show
Two-weight world champion Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] was at the Waterfront Hall on Friday night to support his fellow Irish boxers in action on the big ‘Belfast Boys Are Back‘ BoxNation card.
‘The Jackal’ was sat ringside for much of what was an entertaining night, and Frampton came away with a few thoughts.
In terms of headliner and former Cyclone stablemate Jamie Conlan, who squeaked a split decision over Yader Cardoza, Frampton feels that now is the time for a World title fight.
Writing in his weekly column for the Sunday Life, the Tigers Bay featherweight described how “Jamie got the job done the hard way again and credit to him for digging deep and getting off the floor to beat Yader Cardoza at the Waterfront Hall on Friday night.”
“He’s paid his dues at super-flyweight and just beaten a former World title challenger so he deserves a World title shot in his next fight.”
Perhaps the main reason Frampton was in attendance was just to his good friend and best man, Paddy Barnes, being chief support. Barnes outpointed Adrian Garzon over six, and while Frampton credits the performance, he is still keen to see the double Olympic bronze medalist fast-tracked further.
Frampton outlined that “my mate Paddy Barnes had a good performance against Adrian Garzon of Argentina but he needs a guy in his next fight who is really coming to win.”
“I’d like to see him in with someone like Iain Butcher or even another Belfast man, Luke Wilton. He won’t learn anything from people who just want to cover up.”
Finally there was the Irish title fight between James Tennyson and Declan Geraghty, and Frampton waded into the debate surrounding the sixth round stoppage.
He noted that “James Tennyson showed his power to defeat Declan Geraghty and take the Irish super-featherweight title, though I have to be honest and say that I thought the fight was stopped too soon.”
