Chantelle Cameron – Taylor has to beat Persoon and me to prove she is the best

Chantelle Cameron [11(7)-0] believes Katie Taylor [14(6)-0] has to win a rematch with Delfine Persoon and then beat her before she can call herself the best lightweight in the world.

Most believe, having blazed a trail since turning over and becoming undisputed 135lbs as well as Ring Magazine champion of the world in just 14 fights, the Wicklow native has a strong argument for being pound-for-pound the best womans boxer on the planet.

However former Team GB star and now mandatory challenger for the Irish sensation’s WBC world lightweight title still believes Taylor has something to prove.

The 28-year-old Jamie Moore-trained fighter, believes Persoon was the true victor of her June undisputed clash with the Olympic gold medal winner – and as a result feels the Belgian is the best at the weight.

For Taylor to convince her otherwise she not only has to win a rematch, but go on and beat Cameron, according to the Northampton fighter herself.

“If Katie wants to prove she’s the best lightweight in the world, she needs to beat Delfine Persoon in a rematch and then fight me,” Cameron told World Boxing News.

“I still say Delfine is the No 1 in the division. I thought she beat Katie and if they have a rematch and Delfine wins, I’m happy to fight her. Me and Delfine is also an entertaining fight.”

Cameron has done well to close in on a potential fight with Taylor and is keen to trade leather with the fighter, who attempts to become two weight world champion on top of a Manchester Arena bill on November 2nd.

The British puncher was previously flagged up as possible future foe by Team Taylor, but it appears she will have to wait for her shot.

The 33-year-old four belt world champion has a big fight with Christina Linardatou to look forward to on November 2, a massive and potentially historic clash with Amanda Serrano appears to be waiting in the Spring, an equally big rematch with Persoon is penciled in for the Summer and a two weight undisputed fight with Jessica McCaskill could follow that.

Despite that schedule Cameron seems to believe she is being avoided and claims a fighter between her and Taylor is high on fight fans wish list.

“Katie can’t avoid me forever,” she adds

“Everyone wants to fight Katie and a fight with me makes sense. We were both good amateurs with good styles and it’s a fight people want to see.

“There’s talk of Katie fighting Amanda Serrano, but I’m here and people want to see us fight each other.”

“I want to beat Katie and make history.”
