BUI authorise Irish cruiserweight title fight
The Boxing Union of Ireland have authorised an Irish cruiserweight title fight between Dublin’s former champion Ian Tims [12(3)-3(2)]. and Wexford-Swindon big man Luke Watkins [9(5)-0].
Dubliner Tims is the number one-ranked cruiserweight in Ireland by virtue of his Celtic Warrior title win last year. The Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained Watkins occupies third place on the ladder.
The belt was last held by Tims in 2011 following his win over Mayo’s Michael Sweeney.
While 36 year old Tims, who made the switch to MGM recently for one final push in his career, has yet to comment on the fight, Watkins and his team are massively interested.
A venue in Swindon for St Patrick’s Day has already been booked, although Fitzpatrick has previously told Irish-Boxing.com of the willingness to travel if needed.
Surveying the current Irish scene, Watkins and Tims are the only eligible fighters (bar Irish #2 Tommy McCarthy who is closing in on the British title) for the belt.
