Brian Magee could return against James DeGale
FORMER World champion Brian Magee could make a high profile return to the ring against James Degale.
The former WBA super middleweight champion of the World hasn’t fought since he lost his crown to Great Dane Mikkel Kessler last December. Indeed despite staving off retirement talk, Magee, who has set up a new gym in Belfast, hasn’t discussed any future bouts.
His manager, Pat Magee, however, is confident he could secure the Belfast veteran a clash with WBC Silver champion James DeGale, the fighter who beat Darren Sutherland in the Beijing 2008 Olympic semi finals.
Mick Hennessy, ‘Chunky’s’ promoter has already approached Pat Magee about the clash on three occasions and the manager is confident he could make it happen if former British, European and World champ Brian Magee is interested. Pat Magee also believes the English puncher could provide an easy route back to the top for his charge.
“I had a number of offers for Brian to fight again. Three of the offers have come to box James DeGale. I would love to fight DeGale. If you saw DeGale last time out he doesn’t impress, well he doesn’t impress me anyway,” Pat Magee told Irish-boxing.com.
“Whether Brian can get himself back into that World class condition and mode remains to be seen. He is tipping away at the moment, but if he was going to fight Degale he would need to focus on a intense 10 to 12 weeks in the gym. If he can do that then there is a James Degale fight there for him. DeGale has been messed about by the WBC so he won’t fight for that title next and Mick Hennessy wants to keep him busy, maybe they want to fight a former World champion from Belfast?”
