Breakfast Stroll: Gardiner through to quarters in Baku after cut

Dean Gardiner moved one step closer to Rio qualification this afternoon with a win in his opening fight at the final AOB Olympic qualifier in Baku.

‘Breakfast’ took on India’s Satish Kumar and emerged victorious after his Asian opponent was forced to retire in the second round.

The Asian Games and Asian Championships bronze medalist suffered a nasty cut from an accidental clash of heads and the bout was called to a halt. The decision went to the scorecards, and with the judges split, it was the Tipperary boxer who was given the nod.

Needing to win the tournament outright to qualify for Brazil, Gardiner faces Ukrainian WSB star Viktor Vychryst in the quarters on Tuesday eveling
