Belghecham warns Fitz
8 March 2011 – Jonny Stapleton
Affif Belghecham has promised to take Anthony Fitzgerald and his EBA title dreams apart in City West on March 19.
The Frenchman has disappointing Irish previous having lost a points decision to middleweight contender Andy Lee in 2009. And the 36 year old southpaw is intent on avenging that Irish reverse to spoil local fight fans St Patricks weekend celebrations with victory over the Irish Champion of the Year on the chief support bout to Willie Caseys and Guillermo Rigondeauxs WBA interim World title fight.
Belghecham, who also went the distance with former European Champion Darren Barker and represents Fitzgeralds biggest test to date, plans to gatecrash the world top 15 at The Prides expense. The former EU Champion and EBU Challenger hopes to put himself back on the world title trail and is predicting a routine victory over a fighter he has never heard off.
To be honest when I was offered the fight we did not need to dwell long on a decision. I have bad memories of my fight with Andy Lee and would like to avenge that defeat by beating Fitzgerald in Dublin. I never heard of Anthony Fitzgerald, The Frenchman explained.
I want to get back to where I was. I believe that I will be World Champion, and victory in Ireland will be one step closer to realising that dream. No offence to Fitzgerald but he has not got a chance against me, I have the skill and experience and I will take him apart.
