Anto Cacace secures TV title eliminator next month
After a frustrating period in the aftermath of his first career loss, Anthony Cacace [16(7)-1(0)] has secured a major fight.
The Belfast super featherweight will box next month in Bolton in a Commonwealth title final eliminator.
It has been confirmed that Cacace will fight Ghanaian former world title challenger Joseph Laryea on Saturday May 12th at the Bolton Whites Hotel on a Hennessy Promotions show, live on Channel 5. The fight is one of the chief supports for the British heavyweight title clash between champion Sam Sexton and Hughie Fury.
29-year-old Cacace challenged for the British title and the vacant Commonwealth belt last Summer, losing an extremely close unanimous decision to Matchroom’s Martin J Ward who subsequently picked up the European title with a stoppage of Juli Giner.
After this, ‘The Apache’ kept busy with a wide points win over Nicaraguan journeyman Reynaldo Mora in Birmingham in December.
33-year-old Laryea [24(18)-9(5)] was stopped in the seventh round back in 2011 by Ricky Burnes in a challenge for the Scotsman’s WBO 130lbs title. This fight came after he upset Paul Appleby a few months previously.
Since then the ‘Mandingo’ has mixed between fighting in his home county and as an away opponent for rising prospects in America – losing by stoppage to Mason Menard, Jose Gonzalez, and Jose Felix as well as being edged out on a split-decision by Rod Salka
The Commonwealth title is still held by Martin J Ward – who fights Belfast WBA International titlist James Tennyson on May 5th in London on the Bellew-Haye undercard.
Also featuring on the undercard next month in Bolton are George Brennan, Reece MacMillan, and Jake Barton.
