Amy Broadhurst begins campaign to claim Kellie Harrington’s World lightweight crown today
Amy Broadhurst will be looking to make it a last 32 clean sweep for Ireland today.
The Dundalk sporting legend will be hoping to join Ceire Smith, Christiana Desmond and Michaela Walsh in the last 16 of the Women’s World Elite Championships.
Standing between Broadhurst, a quarterfinalist in the 64kg division last year and a place in the next lightweight round is
Germany’s Maya Kleinhans.
The pair will be in Ring A at approximately 11.30pm (Irish time) this morning in Ulan-Ude, Siberia.
Former Irish coach Eddie Bolger, the current German coach, will be working Kleinhans corner.
Poland and Belarus trade leather in the corresponding bout immediately after the Broadhurst and Kleinhans contest.
Yesterday , Belfast’s No. 5 seed Michaela Walsh scored an emphatic victory over Mali feather Carmara Fatoumata to join Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith and Cork welter Christina Desmond in the last 16 and improve Ireland to 3 and 0 at the 67-nation tournament.
The European silver medallist and two-time Commonwealth finalist meets Ulan-Ude native Liudmila Vorontsova on Tuesday, while Smith is in against North Korea’s No. 1 seed Mi Choi Pang, also on Tuesday.
Desmond faces Canada’s Pam American finalist and No. 5 seed Myriam Da Silva on Wednesday.
