Amateur star to join Katie Taylor on Lee undercard?

While it has been announced that Katie Taylor will appear on the undercard of Andy Lee’s massive world title clash in Thomond Park, there are murmurings of another high-profile amateur bout being on the bill.

A part of the deal to bring boxing’s first lady to Limerick, it is understood that the sport’s amateur governing body have insisted that the card also feature an AIBA Professional Boxing bout.

Ireland currently has two APB fighters, Joe Ward at light heavyweight and David Oliver Joyce at lightweight.

If featured, either would bring their own qualities to the boxing bonanza on September 19th.

Ward is one of the most natural talents ever produced on the island, and the Moate man is a household name after dethroning the legendary Kenny Egan – as well as winning gold at the European Championships aged just seventeen.

Athy firecracker Joyce is also a good fit for the card. It has long been said that the triple EU gold medalist has the perfect style for the professional game – and the Thomond bill would be a great opportunity for him to exhibit his considerable talents.

A press conference to confirm Taylor’s place on the card will be held in the coming weeks and more details on the rumoured APB bout may also be revealed.
