Galway’s Alan Donnellan made a successful return to the ring on Saturday on ‘The Future’ card at the National Stadium.

The 28 year old super middleweight outpointed Gabor Zsalek over six (60:54) to open the show, and the boxing fanatic was on cloud nine afterwards when he spoke to Irish-Boxing.com

The Westerner explained that “I was delighted he turned out so game and tough. I came out the first round and I didn’t really push to much, as Pawel [Popko] instructed me, he gave it a go.”

“You have to give him credit, let’s be honest he is a journeyman whose function was to wipe my rust off.”

“That is exactly what tonight was, getting rid of the rust. I have been training with Pawel the last seven weeks and when I came back- and I am not making excuses – I had a very bad shoulder, but in seven weeks I can see the improvement and the fitness levels.”

“I wasn’t going to stop in there even if it was 12 rounds. Pawel got me in great shape and with a bit more time I know he will get me in great technical shape too.”

The full-time Quantity Surveyor was very complimentary of the whole show and is positive for the future of Irish boxing, and reasoned that “if nothing else. tonight has shown how professional boxing can be received in the National Stadium. It was absolutely amazing out there tonight and I was on first can you imagine what it will be like at the end of the night.

“I would be very intrigued to see what FS Promotions are doing next. I would be very open to working with them in the future. It really was a boxing crowd here and I really enjoyed fighting in front of them.”

A man who just loves the sport, Donnellan finished by admitting that it “was the most craic I had all year. Isn’t boxing the most fun sport in the world? They say it’s brutal and animalistic, but if being animalistic is that much fun I’ll be that.”
