Broadhurst and Desmond impress their way into World quarters – one win from a medal
Christina Desmond and Amy Broadhurst both moved to within one victory of a World Championships medal today.
The pair registered impressive wins in Ulan-Ude, Siberia to reach the quarter finals of the World Women’s Elite Championships.
Broadhurst was first to progress, the Dundalk southpaw earned a 30-37,29-28,29-28,29-28,29-28 unanimous decision over Poland’s Aneta Rygielska.
Broadhurst will now meet Finland’s No. 1 seed Mira Potkonen in the last eight tomorrow with at least bronze up for grabs in a repeat of August European Elite semi-final which the Finn won in Madrid.
Potkonen, who lost five of her six outings with Katie Taylor in the amateur ranks before the Bray won switched codes, comfortably saw off Ecuador’s Marie Palacios this morning.
Broadhurst was full value for her decision as she repeatedly tagged Rygielska with left hooks in the opening two rounds and staggered the Pole with a right in the second.

The Polish 2019 European finalist light-welter finalist who has dropped down to light might have edged the third, but it was never going to be enough to overturn the deficit from the opening two frames.
Cork welter Christina Desmond joined Broadhurst in the last eight thanks to an unanimous decision over Canada’s Pan American finalist Myriam Da Silva.
The Macroom southpaw posted one 10-8 round en route to an emphatic 30-26, 30-37,30-27,30-27, 29-28 win over the Quebec orthodox and No. 5 seed.
Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli awaits in the quarter-finals tomorrow. Surmeneli beat Italy’s No. 5 seed Assunta Canfora, who Desmond has beaten twice in the past, this afternoon.
Desmond was always on top against Da Silva, with all the meatier shots and combinations coming from the gloves of the Leeside lefty who along with Broadhurst is now one win away from at least bronze.
