Amy Broadhurst maintains Ireland’s 100% Worlds start and progresses to last 16

Amy Broadhurst continued Ireland’s 100 percent start to the World Elite Women’s Championships with victory on Sunday morning.

The Dundalk fighter made it four last 32 wins from four for Team Ireland thanks to an unanimous decision over Germany’s Maya Kleinhans in Ulan-Ude, Siberia.

Broadhurst’s backhand was the key to victory in today’s all southpaw battle versus the tall and rangy German, with the Irish European U/22 champion finding the target with the more solid punches in all three rounds of a tight and tactical contest.

The German, who had former Irish coach Eddie Boldger in her corner, had her moments, but the Dundalk fighter won by a 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28,29-28 scorecard.

The victory sees Broadhurst join Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh and Christina Desmond in the last 16 and maintains Ireland’s unbeaten start to the tournament after four bouts.

Broadhurst, who reached the last 16 at 64kgs in India last year, will meet Poland’s former World Youth champion Aneta Rygielska on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals.

No Irish boxers are in action tomorrow.

Smith meets North Korean flyweight Mi Choi Pang, the No. 1 seed in Ulan-Ude on Tuesday, while Walsh will face Russian feather Liudmila Vorontsova on the same day.

Broadhurst and Desmond are between the ropes on Wednesday and Aneta Rygielska and Myriam Da Silva respectively.
