Shut out win for title hungry John Joe Nevin
John Nevin registered a shut out points victory in Wales on Friday night.
The Olympic silver medal winner out classed Jordan Ellison over eight rounds to register a second win of 2019.
The victory, which played out in the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff, came on the same night as fellow former Olympian Steven Donnelly won the Ultimate Boxxer tournament live on BT Sports.
However, it was the recent performance his London 2012 Olympic final opponent Luke Campbell had against Vasyl Lomachenko, that had people querying as to why’The Mullingar Shuffler’ was fighting journey man opposition on a relative small hall card.
The West Meath talent, who is in the debate when it comes to Ireland’s greatest amateurs, has had a stop start career.
He turned over as far back as 2014, but has yet to have a real pro breakthrough. A double leg break did stall his progress significantly, but since recovery he hasn’t been as active as both he and his fans would have liked.
However, at 31 the natural talent is keen to push on and is hoping for a massive 18 months.
Speaking to the Sun before the weekend’s one sided victory Nevin admitted he has been left frustrated of late, but remains hopeful.
The decorated amateur wants to emulate some of his non paid success in the pros and will be looking for major title fights throughout 2020.
“I’ve been pro a few years now, so I need to start progressing and capturing a few titles,” he said.
“It’s frustrating for me because when I was in the amateurs every opponent was world class. I was boxing the best in the world and beating the best in the world. It’s frustrating looking at all the lads I went further than in the amateurs and they are going on to fight for world titles.
“I need to be pushing for a European title or pushing toward big title shots. If I was asked to fight for a world title and get the opportunity in two or three months time, no problem. I want to box the best. I want to be the best and to be the best you have to beat the best.”
The win see’s Nevin improve to 13-0 while his foe slips to 11-24-1.
