Niall Kennedy vows to learn following first pro defeat
Niall Kennedy isn’t giving up on the dream despite suffering defeat in the MGM Springfield on Saturday.
The heavyweight was involved in a highly entertaining clash with America’s 2004 Olympic Team Captain Devin Vargas on a UFC Fight Pass-broadcast Murphys Boxing card, but ultimately lost the bout.
The popular Wexford man was stopped with just four seconds of the fifth round left and suffered a first career defeat to a fighter who had shared the ring with world level operators such as Andy Ruiz, Kevin Johnson, and Dominic Breazeale.
The significant step up was a chance for ‘Boom Boom Baz’ to make a big stride toward a world ranking, but whilst defeat has hampered his momentum somewhat, it hasn’t quashed his desire.
Speaking in the ring post the defeat Kennedy was honest, humble and magnanimous and he continued that trend when speaking to fans online.
“No excuses, beaten by a better man. [Thanks] for all the best wishes and good will in the world I just was not at Devin’s level [tonight]. Heartbroke,n but I am blessed and grateful for all the support and my beautiful family.”
Whilst admitting he wasn’t quite at the level of a fighter who injected new life into his career with the win, Kennedy’s belief he can one day get there hasn’t diminished.
“I’ve seen John Kavanagh say “you only ever Win or Learn” and that’s the plan now. No excuses, tonight wasn’t my night but I know my team believe in me enough to come again. Certain stars didn’t align tonight but tomorrow is another day. I fly home to my beautiful son, thank you all,” the 35-year-old continued on Twitter.
“Life unfortunately isn’t always what we imagine or wish for, but life is special and it’s important to remember that. I’m following a dream very few see or believed in but I’m living [mine].”
