Two Belfast fighters nominated for British Boxing Board of Control Fight of the Year
Fights involving two Belfast fighters have been nominated for British Boxing Board of Control Fight of the Year 2019.
Gym mates and close friends Carl Frampton and Steven Ward are both up for nomination.
Frampton’s December 2018 world title fight with Josh Warrington is one of five bouts shortlisted for the gong.
‘The Jackal’, who was nominated for his clash with Nonito Donaire last year, ultimately lost the bout, but did play his part in an entertaining and exciting dust up. Although he may lament the entertaining part, as he feels he decision to stand and trade early in the fight cost him dear.
Steven Ward has also been nominated for his sensational war with Liam Conroy.
There was blood, guts and eventual glory for ‘The Quietman’ as he finally made some real cruiserweight noise in an Ulster Hall barnstormer.
The efforts of Ward and Conroy as well as Frampton and Warrington have now been rewarded, as the fights are two of several nominations at the British Boxing Board of Control Awards event, which takes place on Friday 27 September at the Royal Lancaster London.
Connacht’s British based welter Gary Corcoran has also been nominated alongside his opponent Johnny Garton. The pair battled it out for the British title that Paddy Gallagher fought for last weekend with Garton coming out on top.
Scott Fitzgerald vs. Anthony Fowler and Josh Taylor vs. Ivan Baranchyk are the other bouts nominated for an award Jamie Conlan and Anthony Nelson won back in 2016.
