Eight is Enough – Dylan Moran takes rounds confusion in his stride to progress towards USA

Dylan Moran [10(5)-0] was happy to get the rounds in on Saturday night as his progression steps up a notch.

The Waterford welterweight outpointed former EU champion Gyorgy Mizsei Jr on the ‘Clash of the Titans’ card at the National Stadium – going eight rounds for the first time.

Indeed, Moran expected to go the distance but he didn’t expect to go eight – having, along with his opponent and the referee, believed the fight was knocked down to a six-rounder on the day, with the official running order saying as much.

However, following a bit of confusion after the sixth, he was back in to do two more and got the extra six minutes in the bank.

“I felt good doing eight,” he laughed when speaking to Irish-Boxing.com afterwards.

“I thought the fight was over after six, but you’re in fight mode so it’s no issue getting back out there.”

“If you have to do another 10 you’re going to do them. It was grand and I am happy to get the extra rounds in.”

It was, by far, the toughest fight of Moran’s ten to date and he left the ring following the 79-74 win with a bloody nose.

The tricky Hungarian was backed up to the ropes throughout but managed to sneak off a lot of hooks on the come-forward Déise man.

It’s all part of the process for 24-year-old Moran who was in the ring for the first time since signing a deal with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing in New York.

Moran admitted that “I got hit a little bit too much, better to learn that at this level I suppose. The crowd get me into the fight and I have to watch that.”

“He was tricky. He was a good boxer too. He has been around the block with three or four times as many fights as me and experience is everything. In that regard it was a good win and a learning experience.”

“It was exciting that is what it’s all about. I am training hard and it’s about the progression. That was a good learning fight. It was another step in the right direction.”

Moran was due to fight on the Bivol-Smith undercard in New York three weeks prior but saw this fight fall through at late notice.

‘The Real Deal’ has been assured of a summer outing in Atlantic City and the full-time pro will be back in the gym shortly – with an autumn Waterford homecoming also in the offing.

“Hopefully it’s America next,” said Moran.

“There is no rush. I am happy to keep moving forward. It’s about progression and learning.”
