Speedy Sean McComb looking to learn before first title tilt

Sean McComb [6(3)-0] admits it’s a long journey to the top, but he is happy to sprint up the boxing ladder rather than walk up it if allowed.

McComb was the star undercard performer at the Ulster Hall last Friday night and took a big step up in stride to impress all those who got to witness it.

The win over former British title challenger Troy James and the manner in which it was delivered suggests the fast-tracked light welter is ready to push the accelerator closer to the floor.

However, while the southpaw talent believes he will get to the top regardless of the pace he takes, he remains keen not to buy into the early hype.

The Danny Vaughan-trained stylist won’t shy away from a challenge and would jump up a level next time out if allowed, but is aware how important it is to remain humble and a student of boxing.

“I am confident. Look at my record, I am 6-0 not even a year in. It’s not even a year since I was in the Commonwealth Games and now I am beating Troy James. You have to be confident. I believe I am going to the very top and it’s just a matter of how fast I do it,” he said after the fight before responding to questions as to how fast he would like to go.

“As fast as they want to let me go!”

It’s a statement that matched a performance which was full of style and self belief, yet the Turf Lodge man is aware that he will have to making regular learning pit stops along the journey to the top.

“You can’t stop learning in this game. You have to keep developing and developing. It’s a long journey to the top and you can’t get ahead of yourself and think you are a lot better than you actually are.”

“You have to stay humble and go back to the gym and focus on improving,” he adds before noting his thirst for knowledge to date proved vital in his most recent win.

“I am always trying to learn and working on new tactics with Danny. It’s as well we have that approach because of the late change in opponent and the last minute step up. You have to be ready and that is exactly what I was, ready.”

“You have to be switched on and it stops you from developing bad habits. I had to be switched on in there. He was smart and tricky. He was dropping his head low and trying to make me commit a little more than I usually do.”

“I had to stay switched on to counter attacks too and it was good to have that for a change.”

Friday night in Belfast represented McComb’s first fight of the year and he hopes his last fight of 2019 will be for a title.

“I will have a title shot by the end of year. That is the first one out of the way and ring rust off and hopefully it’s a step toward a massive 2019 and a title by the end of the year.”
