‘I am not thinking about Katie Taylor’- claims WBC champ Delfine Persoon
Katie Taylor and a massive undisputed New York fight is the furthest thing from WBC world champion Delfine Persoon’s mind as she prepares to defend her strap in Belgium this Saturday night.
The long reigning world title holder has been on Taylor’s lucrative radar for some time now and talks for a possible June, Madison Square Garden clash on the Anthony Joshua versus Jarrell Miller undercard have already begun.
If both come through their next tests, Persoon [42(17)-1] this weekend and Taylor six days after, it looks certain the pair will trade leather on DAZN and Sky Sports for all the lightweight belts on 1 June.
However, while the 33 year old’s team are are working on terms for a possible undisputed fight against Taylor, who fights WBO champ Rose Volante in Philadelphia on March 15, the champion claims Melissa St. Vil [11(1)-3-4] has her full attention.
The Belgium makes the ninth defence of her title against the The Haitian-American in her homeland and is adamant she has ‘Little Miss Tyson’ vision at present.
“I’m really looking forward to this fight,” said Persoon.
“For now, I’m not thinking about Katie Taylor, but it is true that this fight is very important. Otherwise, if I don’t win, all the fights that came before this were a measure of nothing.”
“This isn’t a game like football (soccer) where a loss can be corrected the following week. Everything depends on that single result, that one moment.”
Persoon goes into the clash as favourite considering she is the natural lightweight, has massive world title experience and home town advantage.
However, St Vil is a respected operator with plenty of on the road experience. Interestingly enough she lost in Finland to recent Taylor foe Eva Wahlstrom and argues she was the true winner of that WBC super feather title fight.
The Brooklyn based puncher is expected to try and pressure Persoon despite moving up in weight, but the Belgian is adamant she will lead the dance this Saturday night.
“I’ve already had a lot of fights and seen a lot of styles, but I’m not the one who has to adjust. I’m going to use my boxing style, like always. It’s up to her to find solutions.”
