Spike O’Sullivan defeats snooker legend in exhibition match

His fists are his weapon of choice but it seems light middleweight world title hopeful Spike O’Sullivan [29(20)-3(2)] is handy with a cue too!

The Cork light middleweight managed to beat snooker legend Steve Davis at his own game on Wednesday night.

Snooker greats Davis and Jimmy White were in the Rebel County on Wednesday and, never one to miss a trick, Spike saw the opportunity to challenge six-time world champion Davis for a game – and the Mahon man, who is an avid fan and player, came away with victory.

The 34-year-old, who returned to winning ways in the ring with victory over Gabor Gorbics in Mayo in December, is a massive Ronnie O’Sullivan fan and emulated his namesake by producing the goods around the table and defeating the six time world champion.

Following the win in Skibbereen, the victorious O’Sullivan tweeted “F**k it have to tweet this in case I wake up in the morning thinking it was all a dream! Had one of the best nights in my life tonight managed somehow to beat one of my idols Steve Davis. What a night & what a guy Steve is a total gentleman & great entertainer.”

Davis, initially cried foul, but eventually congratulated the Golden Boy and Murphys Boxing puncher.

He said: “I woz robbed!!… Well played Spike! After you finish pummeling people in the ring I reckon we could get you making tons in no time!!”

Sadly there is no footage of what we’re sure was an epic encounter.

The pair would then go out for a meal together afterwards.

It’s not the first time O’Sullivan has gone toe-to-toe with a snooker great either.

Last year the Celtic Warriors man and Irish boxing journalist Kevin Byrne has a fascinating sit-down chat with Ronnie O’Sullivan, himself a massive boxing fan.
