Katie Taylor set to feature on massive Madison Square Garden card

Katie Taylor [11(5)-0] looks set to have another big world title fight confirmed.

The WBA-IBF lightweight champion defended her belts last month in Boston with a one-sided win over Cindy Serrano and, in the immediate aftermath, a fight on the Canelo Alvarez v Rocky Fielding undercard was mooted.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has now confirmed that Taylor is likely to feature on the Saturday December 15th card at the Madison Square Garden Arena in New York.

The bill is to be a DAZN ‘blockbuster’ show, a pay-per-view equivalent on the streaming platform, although one which requires no extra fee.

Canelo headlines the Golden Boy promotion in a step up to super middleweight, facing Matchroom’s Rocky Fielding and Hearn has revealed that he has two slots on the bill.

One of these will go to IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer, who defended against James Tennyson last month on the same bill as Taylor, with the Philly southpaw taking a voluntary defence versus Costa Rican Francisco Fonseca. The winner of this belt will go on to defend against the winner of the December 8th final eliminator between Dubliner Jono Carroll and Frenchman Guillaume Frenois.

The other looks likely to go to 32-year-old Taylor, with the Connecticut-based fighter continuing to be built on the U.S. East Coast with a third world title fight of the year.

An appearance the Dillian Whyte v Dereck Chisora undercard at the O2 Arena in London, where Taylor won her other world title fight this year, on December 22nd had been mooted as an alternative to the Canelo card but a Stateside spot now looks to be sealed.

Hearn told IFL TV that the undercard next month will feature “probably Tevin Farmer and Katie Taylor – it’s not officially announced, but at least two championship fights.”

An opponent for Taylor remains to be confirmed.

Amanda Serrano, six-weight world champion and younger sister of Cindy, has linked up with Matchroom along with former foe Jessica McCaskill but both opponents would look more likely for next year.

A unification with WBO champion Rose Volante [14(8)-0] is Team Taylor’s preferred option but whether the Brazilian can be tempted out of South America remains to be seen.

The undercard next month also features Sadam Ali, Yves Ulysse Jr, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Ryan Garcia, Bilal Akkawy, Lamont Roach, and a middleweight clash between David Lemieux and Tureano Johnson.
