Conor Wallace set to be fast-tracked Down Under
Conor Wallace [1(1)-0] returns to the ring this Saturday morning and he already looks to be on the Australian fast track.
The Brisbane-based light heavy, one month on from his professional debut, is back at the Famous Fortitude in Newstead, and, should he win this weekend, also has a big step-up lined up for next month.
Things are moving quickly for the Newry youngster who impressed on his debut with a second round stoppage win over Aaron Sesay.
“It was a great experience,” Wallace recalled when speaking to Irish-Boxing.com.
“I learned not to rush things just relax and stick to my boxing and if the stoppage comes it comes – and it did.”
“Yes I have settled in well, I think I’m improving every day, my balance, I’m sitting down on my punches a lot more and improving all round as a fighter. I’m really enjoying it here in Australia weather, atmosphere, training facilities, and the people are great – can’t ask for much more!”
Now set for his second, and possibly last, four rounder, the 22-year-old has been hard at work in the Brisbane suburb of Fortitude Valley.
The St Monico’s and Holy Family graduate has been training alongside and sparring with this weekend’s headliner Ben Kite among others.
Wallace can feel and see the improvements in his game and the Ulster puncher noted how “training camp has been brilliant, I’ve had lots of quality rounds of sparring.”
“Great conditioning training, too, my nutrition has been excellent, I’m feeling stronger and fitter than ever and I’m looking forward to putting on a show Saturday night.”
On the receiving end this weekend is debutant Dean Abramo and Wallace freely admits that he hasn’t done his homework.
“I don’t know much about him to be honest,” he said.
“I don’t look to much into that. I worry about getting myself ready and I’m ready for who ever they put in front of me.”
As mentioned earlier, Saturday is the first of a run of scheduled fights for Wallace and, should he win, he is slated to face fellow undefeated prospect Mitchell Whitelaw in a five-rounder next month with a further date on St Patrick’s Weekend also in the pipeline.
It’s the sort of activity the Irish U22 and Ulster Senior champion wants and he stated that “I’m over the moon, like I said before I’d fight every weekend if I could, I love fighting.”
“So, as long as everything goes to plan I will be kept busy and put myself in position for the Australian title next year, that is my goal.”
