Raging Bull Corbett on title charge
FORMER Commonwealth and Irish cruiserweight champion Darren Corbett will return to the ring on April 14 after two years away from the ring as part of the ’Unfinished Business’ Tyson Fury-Martin Rogan show at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast.
The Titanic Heavyweight battle between Fury and Rogan will be broadcast live on Channel 5.
‘Raging Bull’ Corbett says he has some unfinished business of his own in the ring and is determined to defeat another Irishman Michael Sweeney of Mayo to get his career back on track and possibly set up an Irish title fight with Ian Timms.
Corbett, known as one of the biggest punchers Irish boxing has ever produced, is now 39 but speaking to the Belfast Telegraph newspaper the Belfast native says he will be better than ever.
“I have two new beautiful kids, four other great kids and I’m also a grandfather and I love them all and I’m fighting for them. All I ever wanted was a wee sweetie shop, a deposit for a shop to get me going and that’s what this fight is all about,” said Corbett to the Belfast Telegraph.
“I never thought I would be fighting at 36 never mind 39… the simple fact is I’m not making anything out of this fight. This is covering my brain scan and medicals and expenses so I can fight again. I’d love a bit of sponsorship for my shorts to get me a few quid.
“I need the money, there’s no work about and even though I’m not making one penny it gets me back and in one good year I know I can do a bit of damage, I have to. I don‘t feel 40, I feel 18.”
Corbett will continue his preparation for April 14 by sparring with unbeaten former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. He has had many long spells of inactivity but is hoping he can now have one last chance of becoming a champion again.
Joining Tyson Fury, Martin Rogan and Darren Corbett will be middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Jr from Brighton, Former Commonwealth Champion Irishman John O’Donnell from Shepherd’s Bush, Belfast fighters Jamie Conlan, Dee Walsh, Tommy Tolan, Ciaran Healy,Marc Mccullough, Conall Carmichael, Moses Matovu and County Mayo’s Michael Sweeney.
