Money Talks – Katie Taylor Rival Retires

Katie Taylor [10(5)-0] will defend her WBA and IBF lightweight titles versus Cindy Serrano in Boston on October 20th but a win over the Puerto Rican will no longer lead to a mega fight with Amanda Serrano.

Younger sister Amanda [35(26)-1(0)] is the far higher-profile and outspoken of the boxing siblings but women’s boxing’s only ever six-weight world champion has announced her retirement from the sport.

The New York-based puncher had sent verbals the way of Taylor and had been frequently mentioned as a potential 2019 opponent for the Wicklow woman but this now looks unlikely

After winning the WBO light welterweight belt last month, the 29-year-old has announced that she is to focus solely on her mixed martial arts career.

Serrano debuted in the octagon earlier this year, being held to a draw in her debut.

The Caribbean fighter has been outspoken regarding the lack of earning potential for female boxers – especially in contrast to female mixed martial artists.

With this in mind – the potential money involved in a Taylor fight could perhaps tempt ‘The Real Deal’ back to the ring.

Taylor’s trainer, Ross Enamait, had a different view.

The Bray boxer is currently finishing off camp in Connecticut ahead of her fight with the elder Serrano [27(10)-5(0)-3].

This clash at the TD Garden and will be aired in Ireland on Sky Sports and in America on DAZN on a card which also features an IBF super featherweight title challenge for James Tennyson versus champion Tevin Farmer, and an appearance for Niall Kennedy.
