17-year-old Cork boxer debuts in style in Mexico

James Power officially became Ireland’s youngest current pro boxer in the home of teen punchers on Sunday.

The 17-year-old replaced Golden Boy’s Aaron McKenna as Ireland’s youngest pro pugilist in some style.

The Leaving Cert student overcame the disappointment of having the first of what was meant to be two quick fire bouts in Mexico called off by registering an impressive win.

Power, powered to debut victory stopping his opponent in the second round of his Mexican hosted fight.

The Cork fighter stopped 23 year old Omar Santos in the second round of his first paid fight.

Power, who is currently being advised by Assassin Promotions and trained by Declan Geraghty Snr, will become somewhat of a regular in Mexico before returning to box in Ireland when he turns 18 next April.

Santos wasn’t the only one to get KO’d on Sunday night, the win also knocked out Monday evening home work for the students of Coachford College, the school Power currently attends.
