Cindy Serrano claims Katie Taylor is ducking sister Amanda
They may think they are facing the lesser of the two boxing sisters but Cindy Serrano claims Team Taylor are in for a surprise come October 6th.
Unified lightweight champion Katie Taylor [9(4)-0] faces American Kimberley Connor as part of the Dillian Whyte v Joseph Parker undercard on next weekend in London but was recently announced, some say disrespectfully, for the inaugural Matchroom USA show in Chicago this Autumn.
Taylor had been linked to younger Serrano sister and five-weight champ, Amanda, but it looks as though that fight is being built up via a scrap with her sibling.
Serrano [27(10)-5(0)-3] claims she ‘knows’ she is underestimated going into the clash and argues that Team Taylor have chosen what they believe is an “easy” option.
The WBO featherweight champion believes her opponent and her matchmakers think size will play a big factor in the fight. The puncher, who moves up two weights to challenge for Taylor’s WBO and IBF crowns providing Taylor beats Connor, stresses she has proven herself against bigger fighters.
The 36-year-old, who is been undefeated since losing a pair of decisions to Mathis and Mikael Lauren up at welterweight back at the start of the decade, feels that sister Amanda has been avoided in this instance.
“I am happy for this great challenge,” the Puerto Rican told BoxingScene.
“I know that they are underestimating me and believe that I am easy but if they look at my record, they can see that I have fought with bigger girls and I’ve faced them at 147 and 154 pounds”.
“When I faced Ann Sophie Mathis in France, she had a record of 24 wins and one loss with 21 knockouts and they thought that because the fight was taking place at 147 pounds and I have never fought at that weight, they were going to knock me out and it was not like that.”
“My sister Amanda has been challenging Taylor for several months and she didn’t want to fight her,” she added ahead of the clash.
It is expected that Taylor’s belts will be on the line on October 6th, with the Wicklow woman a 1/100 favourite to defeat Texan Connor next Saturday [July 24th] at the O2 Arena.
Amanda Serrano [34(26)-1(0)-1] last held the WBO super bantamweight title. The southpaw has recently dipped into mixed martial arts to supplement her earnings but the Lou DiBella-managed fighter is set to return to boxing in search of a big-money Taylor title fight.
The Chicago card, the venue for which is still to be confirmed, will feature IBF world champion Artur Beterbiev in a mandatory defense against British challenger Callum Johnson. Also on the bill: former light middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade, heavyweight contender Jarrell Miller and former two-weight champ Jessie Vargas who is expected to face Adrian Granados.
