Glove and Marriage for upcoming groom Dylan McDonagh
The honeymoon period in professional boxing is over for Dylan McDonagh [2(1)-0] but the Jobstown bantamweight now has an actual honeymoon to prepare for.
‘The Firecracker’ gets married soon and will then jet out to New York.
However, it won’t be a time for relaxation and indulgence as McDonagh has a fight date scheduled for July 7th.
Having seen numerous fight dates fall through, the Tallaght workhorse was never going to turn down the opportunity to box on the inaugural JB Promotions card at the National Stadium in Dublin.
And so, his intense training will continue throughout his honeymoon although McDonagh wouldn’t have it any other way.
Indeed, the 32-year-old will probably have to be dragged out of the gym for the ceremony
“The wedding won’t be a problem, I’ll be as fit as a fiddle – I’ll be training in the hotel!” he told Irish-Boxing.com
“I just want to fight. I’m always training.”
“I’m going on honeymoon to New York but I said to Stephen Sharpe [manager] that I have sparring and training sorted at the Mendez Gym.”
Following two four-round wins in his debut year as a pro, the energiser bunny-style fighter hopes that July 7th will be his final ‘learning fight’ before a move to bigger and better things.
McDonagh described how “it will be a four rounder, I’ll be more than ready, get that out of the way and then get on to big domestic fights.”
“Please God I’ll get this out of the way and then big fights.”
A domestic dust-up with Bray’s Regan Buckley had been floated but the Wicklow youngster has since returned to the amateur game.
With that, McDonagh feels he may now need to look overseas and the super-fit fighter believes he fits the mould for going away and challenging British names on their home turf – somewhat in the vein of event promoter Jay Byrne who thrice fought on Sky Sports bills last year.
McDonagh outlined how “me and Regan are cool, but that would have been a super fight, that would have been action from the start. I’ve sparred him many times and it was good, we both worked each other.”
“The bantamweight division is not very stacked in Ireland so I want to start going down the same route as Jay and fight big English names, that’s what I want to do, that’s my aspiration.”
“I’ll take a short-notice call, I’m always training, I’m always ready.”
