Going for Gold – FOUR Irish fighters in European Youth finals
It’s one of the biggest days for Irish underage boxing ever with four fighters going for European Youth gold in Italy.
A quarter of the 16-boxer team have reached the finals in Roseto and all will box for gold this afternoon.
There were four wins from six in the semi-finals yesterday, with women’s team captain Lauren Hogan and Jude Gallagher being forced to settle for bronze.
With a quartet of silvers guaranteed, Daina Moorehouse, Dearbhla Rooney, Evelyn Igharo, and Dean Clancy will now look to make it a historic day for Irish boxing.
First up is last year’s European Junior gold medalist Moorehouse who faces Russian Ksenia Becshastnova in the light fly final. This will be the first bout of the session at 1:00pm.
At around 1:55pm it is the turn of Leitrim featherweight Dearbhla Rooney. The Sean McDermott’s fighter had a sensational win over Russia yesterday and will box Slovakian Jessica Triebelova – a double European Junior gold medalist – in today’s decider.
Just after 2:30pm will be the final Irish fighter in of the afternoon session with Louth light welter Evelyn Igharo boxing England’s Gemma Richardson, a European Junior gold and silver medalist who has previously defeated the rangey Clann Naofa fighter at the Monkstown Box Cup.
Moving on to the evening session, at 5:15pm there is another Ireland v England affair at flyweight with last year’s European Junior silver medalist Dean Clancy of Sligo taking on Ivan Price. The Leeds fighter has plenty of Irish previous having defeated Terry Donoghue in the final of the 2016 European Juniors and Davey Oliver Joyce Jr en-route to claiming European Youth silver last year.
All times Irish time.
The fights also have a big impact beyond medals for Rooney and Clancy. A gold medal today, and a gold medal only, will secure them a place in the Youth Olympics in Argentina this Autumn.
The European Youths have also acted as a qualifier for the World Youth Championships. All six Irish medalists and Galway light heavyweight Edward Barrett are assured of their spots at the World Championships in Hungary this Summer.
Kilkenny bantamweight Brandon McCarthy will be cheering on Maksym Halinichev in the 56kg final as a win for the Ukrainian versus the home favourite Daniele Oggiano will secure him a spot at the Worlds.
