Quiet McKenna set for set for busy schedule
Ireland’s youngest pro Aaron McKenna is more than happy to let his fists do the talking – and they will be doing a lot of that in 2018.
The 18-year-old former underage star made significant noise when he was snapped up by American power promoters Golden Boy and has turned up the volume with three impressive performances to date.
Late last week and less than four months into pro life, the Monaghan took his third win and wasn’t long about putting Keasen Freeman down at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Los Angeles.
The victory and particularly the manner – he won within a round for the second time in three fights – increases McKenna chatter further.
However, the fighter himself admits to being somewhat reserved and even quiet out of the ring.
“That’s why the call me ‘The Silencer’ – outside the ring I am quiet then once I get in that is where I do my talking,” McKenna, whose brother Stevie McKenna has joined him in the pro ranks and on the books of Sheer Sports management group, said after the victory.
“I felt strong in there. I was hitting hard and I was happy to get the first round KO.”
The young prospect, who is joined Jason Quigley and Spike O’Sullivan on the Golden Boy books, has been kept busy since debuting. Indeed, despite seeing two fights fall through, he has managed to fight three times in as many months and predicts he will continue to rack up the bouts and wins over 2018.
If things go to plan, McKenna is likely to be Ireland’s busiest pro this year and the Courage Tshabalala-trained fighter could enter 2019 with a 9-0 record.
“Golden Boy have planned eight fights for me, no less than six, so I am going to be kept busy. I like to be kept busy.”
