Roy Sheahan secures crucial debut date

Before he vyes to be Ireland’s Last Man Standing, amateur legend Roy Sheahan must blow off the cobwebs and prove he still has it.

The 2007 EU gold medalist at welterweight was a shock inclusion in the Prizefighter-style middleweight tournament with a prize fund of €59,000.

The Athy fighter will be turning pro aged 33 for the competition at the National Stadium on Satuday March 3rd, however he won’t be making his debut on the TG4-broadcast card.

Before the Boxing Union of Ireland will finalise his place in the tournament Sheahan, who has not boxed comptetitively since winning the Elite Senior light heavyweight title in February 2015, must first make his debut and get a win on the board.

This will hopefully come on Saturday February 10th, with the Kildare fighter tonight confirming that he will make his debut on a York Hall bill in London.

‘The Joker’ has linked up with coach Steve O’Rourke in Dublin and has taken a break from work to train full-time.

Sheahan will fight on a Hellraiser Boxing card, competing in a four-round contest in the famous Bethnal Greene venue.

The lilywhite said that “I know I’ve been out a while, but I still have the hunger for the game.”

Should he get through his first fight unscathed, Sheahan will join Chris Blaney, Bernard Roe, Sean McGlinchey, Alfredo Meli, and three to-be-confirmed fighters in the Last Man Standing tournament.
