Flyweight Paddy Barnes applies for Middleweight Last Man Standing

Paddy Barnes is as renowned for his talent and confidence as he is for his quick wit and cheeky nature.

In that regard it’s hard to determine whether or not he was joking or defiantly laying down a challenge to Ireland’s middleweights when he applied for Last Man Standing.

When Assassin and Red Corner announced the March 3rd Prizefighter style competition  they opened the tournament  to any one with Irish connections that could get within a 155lbs and 165lbs.

The weight spread is deliberate to increase the number of applicants the independent selection process have to chose between as they try to pick eight fighters that will ensure an entertaining night of action.

However, the 10 pound swing was meant to entice light and super middleweights with eyes on  a 25,000 prize, but a high name flyweight has put his name in the hat.

Three time Olympian Barnes has filled out the application form according to Jonathan Graham of Red Corner Promotions.

“Neither promoter involved have a say in the final eight and we haven’t revealed the names of anyone who has applied. Some have gone public that they want in and I can say Paddy Barnes filled out the form online,” Graham told Irish-boxing.com.

“It has to be tongue in cheek. Hasn’t it? Although you would never know with Paddy. I saw Declan Geraghty tweet he would do okay against middleweights over three rounds so maybe smaller lads are interested. It’s up to the selection panel, but I can’t see the BUI allowing Barnes in.”

“He said he was at middleweight now so it has to be Paddy just having a laugh again.”
