SK Promotions start off with strong showing
SK Promotions hit the ground running in Dublin last night.
The new promotional company, ran by Kilnamanagh trainer Stephen Kavanagh, ran their inaugural show – Next Generation – at the CityWest Hotel.
Before a punch had been thrown there was a blow to the show, with middleweight debutant Cillian Reardon having his fight cancelled at the last minute due to licensing issues for his opponent.
Going ahead as a five-fight card, the night was kicked off with an entertaining domestic dust-up between light heavyweights Chris Mullally and Manny Bique. Mullally had struggled in his debut before rescuing a win with a late knockdown, while Bique had a nightmare first contest, being stopped in the second round. Here the pair went toe-toe-toe in a fun fight, with Kildare’s Mullally [2(0)-0] eventually prevailing on a 39-37 scoreline.
Waterford middleweight Craig McCarthy then built on his debut, which was subdued in the ring if not the stands, with a dominant win over tough Pole Michal Ciach. McCarthy [2(0)-0] scored a big knockdown in the fourth and final round to seal a 40-35 win.
Following a fight of the year contender in his debut, lightweight Liam Gaynor was involved in another competitive scrap here. Durable Pole Krzysztof Rogowski looked to drag the Tallaght teen into a war with some underhand tactics – eventually seeing him docked a point in the second for holding – but Gaynor [2(0)-0] stayed smart and claimed a 40-35 win.
Rathmines lightweight Victor Rabei the became the latest Irish prospect to be involved in a fun fight with Damian Lawniczak. The game Pole gave Rabei [3(0)-0] a test in what was the chief support bill on the night, but The Chisinau Cyclone claimed a 39-37 win.
Headlining the night in a six-rounder was Killinarden light welter Sean Creagh. The home favourite was given a good work-out by Hungarian Ferenc Jarko. A tough fight, Creagh [7(2)-1(1)]was eventually ruled a 59-55 winner to round off a good night of boxing.
