Frank Warren pencils in Windsor Park date for Carl Frampton
Carl Frampton has been promoted by Frank Warren for a matter of days, but the veteran promoter has already provisionally booked a date at Windsor Park for next Summer.
The Belfast featherweight has long spoken of his desire to fight at the 18,434-seater football ground in the south of the city and the deliverance of such an opportunity was one his crucial conditions when negotiating with prospective promoters over the past month.
After announcing his split from the McGuigan family last month there has been weeks of speculation regarding Frampton’s next move.
Eddie Hearn pledged to provide Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] with a Windsor rubber match against Leo Santa Cruz should he re-join Matchroom, but ‘The Jackal’ confirmed on Sunday that he is to link up with Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and the BT Sport platform.
Frampton had hoped to box at Windsor this summer, initially a third fight with WBA champ Santa Cruz before then hoping to challenge IBF titlist Lee Selby. Neither of these fights could be made and then it would emerge that the venue was unavailable in any case due to the Irish Football Association’s hosting of the Women’s Under-19s European Championships.
Frampton then looked set to face Andres Gutierrez at the SSE Odyssey Arena on Saturday before the Mexican was forced to pull out following a freak slip in the shower that left him unable to fight.
The separation with the McGuigan’s emerged in the aftermath, and in recent weeks the 30 year old has joined up with trainer Jamie Moore and taken on management outfit Mack the Knife Global in an advisory role.
A press conference to announce Frampton’s next fight will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at the Ulster Hall, with a return to the SSE Odyssey Arena expected for Saturday November 18th.
This press conference will be open to the public, and a big fight for Frampton’s reunited stablemate Jamie Conlan is also set to be announced.
