Carl Frampton explains why he picked Frank Warren over Eddie Hearn
Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] has had a big choice to make over the past few weeks, and revealed his decision yesterday.
The Belfast featherweight confirmed that he has signed a promotional deal with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions.
The veteran English promoter however wasn’t the only person looking to replace Cyclone and the McGuigan family as Frampton’s promoter.
Frampton admits that a “very similar” offer was on the table from Eddie Hearn for the 30 year old to re-join Matchroom Promotions.
However, the chance to be the figurehead for boxing on a television channel helped Frampton plump for the BT-backed Warren over the Sky-supported Hearn.
Writing in his weekly column for the Sunday Life, where he announced the deal, Frampton explained how “I had interest from the America and the U.K., but then it really came down to two very similar offers from Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren.”
“But after some hard thinking I felt that the overall package that Frank Warren and BT Sport were offering me was the deciding factor.”
“They are going to have me as one of the faces of boxing on BT which is a real honour for me and that was never going to happen with Sky who obviously have Anthony Joshua as their main main.”
“This is a deal I believe will give me the best chance to have massive fights that I crave and I have been guaranteed that I will be fighting at Windsor Park next summer.”
Hearn had been extremely vocal in his desire to re-sign Frampton, and indeed many observers believed that this would be the best move for the Ulsterman.
At the present moment Sky Sports and the Matchroom stable is a higher-profile platform and the greater number of world champions, but Frampton feels that the landscape is changing and is happy with his choice.
The two-weight world champion outlined how “I know that some people thought that Eddie Hearn and Sky might have been the obvious option but BT have already shown how quickly they can develop their platform with the way they have bought the rights to Premier League football and the Champions League.”
“They’re also going to have the opportunity of doing pay-per-view fights in the same way that Sky do them so everything is in place for me to get back to what I do best.”
“They have very big plans for how they are going to cover boxing over the coming years and this deal between myself and Frank Warren shows just how serious they are.”
“With this great deal that was agreed with my advisors MTK, I am the number one fighter on BT and with two or three years left in my career that was important, to have that big focus on how I go forward.”
Frampton will return to the ring in Belfast soon, seemingly on November 18th, and he is eyeing big fights with the big names on the BT platform.
He added that “I believe this is the right decision for me as I look to get back into the big time and get the glamour fights with Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA title, WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez, IBF champion Lee Selby and then look at moving up to super featherweight before I retire.”
