Liam Gaynor planning to “get the name out there as quick as possible” with debut Bazza brawl

Tallaght lightweight Liam Gaynor debuts this Saturday on the largest card in Irish boxing history, and the teenager wants to stand out.

Gaynor features in one of seventeen contests on the bumper Celtic Clash 2 bill at the National Stadium, and the 19 year old will make his pro bow in an all-Irish clash.

The Kilnamanagh puncher will debut against Belfast’s Alec Bazza [0-24(3)-2] in a bout that immediately looks to be a potential fight of the night.

Gaynor will be giving up size and experience against ‘The Belfast Spartan,’ and acknowledges that it is a risky first fight, however the redhead wants to stand out.

“I’ll give it a go,” the laid back youngster told Irish-Boxing.com. “I may as well give it a bash!”

“If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but if it does, it’s better for me isn’t it?”

“It’ll get the name out there as quick as possible.”

“He needs his first win and I’m getting a test. It’s better than boxing someone that nobody knows.”

While the all-action Bazza wll be looking to give Gaynor a baptism of fire, the Dubliner believes he has been getting the perfect preparation.

Gaynor has been sparring with fellow Tallaght fighter Sean Creagh and noted how “it’s been good, getting sparring with a high-pressure fighter.”

“It’s helping me build a tolerance to them. Bazza, he’s a bit like that, he’s a pressure fighter.”

Gaynor’s confidence has been boosted by a strong first camp with coach Stephen Kavanagh, and he wants to show off the results of this on Saturday night

“I’ve definitely improved a lot and I’m enjoying training, it’s great,” said Gaynor.

“I’ve definitely sped up my hands which is something that wouldn’t have been my main attribute and I’m hoping to show everyone that on the 27th of May.”

“I can’t wait. The nerves are starting to get to me, but a couple of nerves aren’t bad.”

The card next Saturday is headlined by Eric Donovan, with further support from Mike Perez, Jay Byrne, Gerard Whitehouse, Stephen Carroll, Sean Creagh, Vladimir Belujsky, Rohan Date, Carl McDonald, Allan Phelan, and Lynn Harvey, as well as debutants John Joyce, Regan Buckley, John Corcoran, Stephen McAfee, and Keane McMahon.

Tickets for Celtic Clash 2 are priced at €15 (Under 15s), €30, €40, €45, and €55 (Premium), and are available from the boxers involved.
