Carl Frampton apologises to fans for delayed fight announcement
Cyclone Promotions are still exploring a number of avenues for Carl Frampton‘s next fight, which is still set to take place in Belfast this Summer.
The announcement on Friday that Cyclone’s Josh Taylor will face Ohara Davies in Scotland on July 8th saw some suggest that Frampton’s Summer homecoming has been delayed – as Taylor-Davies would seem to have been the perfect chief support.
‘The Jackal’ however has confirmed that he is still fight in the Titanic City this Summer, and has apologised to fans for the delay in the announcement of who the opponent will be.
In addition, Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] also moved to clarify that his reclassification to super featherweight in the WBA rankings does not necessarily signal an immediate move up in weight, instead it is more a case of keeping his options open
Writing in his weekly column for the Sunday Life, Frampton acknowledged that “being placed at No.2 in the WBA’s world super-featherweight ratings caused a bit of a stir and it does mean I have the option of a big fight at the higher weight after Leo Santa Cruz refused to play ball and make our third battle.”
“Just because the WBA have rated me in the 9st 4lb division doesn’t necessarily mean I will be fighting at that weight in my next fight but it will be a big one in Belfast this Summer.”
In terms of who is next, four-weight champ Nonito Donaire had been believed to be a front runner, while Costa Rican Bryan Vazquez threw his name into the hat last week.
Frampton noted that there are a number of options, but the Ulsterman is cautious about offering any hints.
The 30 year old two-weight champ outlined how “my team at Cyclone Promotions are still working on a few options and we can’t say anything until something is signed, otherwise if it falls through you’re the worst in the world.”
“But there is nothing set in stone and I feel I have to apologise to my fans because things have dragged on a bit but that’s the way the boxing politics can work sometimes.”
