English champion hoping for Jamie Conlan clash on Belfast BoxNation show next month

Jamie Conlan [19(11)-0] looks to have one final hurdle to jump before his long-awaited world title fight, and a big British name wants to be that very challenge.

‘The Mexican’ Conlan fights in an eight rounder on the BoxNation ‘Battle of Belfast’ bill at the Waterfront Hall on Saturday June 17th. Should he win here, Conlan is in line for a vacant WBO super flyweight title fight with Hong Kong’s Rex Tso.

The Belfast man, the current Commonwealth champion, was not expected to have an overly difficult test last month, but the current English champion has revealed that he wants and is in talks for the fight.

Birmingham boxer Don Broadhurst [19(4)-3(0)-1] scored a keep-busy win last weekend and now wants to take on Conlan.

Now 33, ‘The Don’ has been a pro for over a decade since winning Commonwealth Games gold in 2006. He would win the rainbow belt now held by Conlan back in 2008 before defending this twice before losing it in 2009 a domestic unification with then-British champion Lee Haskins.

A stop-start period to his career would ensue, but Broadhurst would win the English title last October with a rematch victory over Louis Norman, whom has also stated his desire for a Conlan clash.

Speaking after his win over Craig Derbyshire at the weekend, Broadhurst told the Tamworth Herald that “my manager is looking to see if we can get a fight with Conlan in Belfast this June.”

“I want to test myself against good people. He is world-ranked and a good boxer who has had some exciting fights.”

“I would be well up for that challenge so let’s see if we can get it on!”

The card on June 17th also features Lewis Crocker, Davey Oliver Joyce, and Sean McGlinchey, alongside an IBF East/West European title fight between Jono Carroll and Johnny Quigley, and WBO European title fights for Paddy Barnes and Steve Ormond against Silveau Oltneau and Craig Evans respectively.
