Carl Frampton begins camp for Belfast homecoming fight
An opponent may not yet be confirmed, but Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] has begun his training camp in London for his next fight.
‘The Jackal’ looks set to have a Belfast homecoming after almost two and a half years away this Summer at his beloved Windsor Park.
Frampton returned to London and McGuigan’s Gym last week to begin preparing for the fight, his first since losing the WBA featherweight title to Leo Santa Cruz in January.
McGuigan is currently preparing George Groves for a world title fight with Fedor Chudinov on May 27th, while Conrad Cummings is currently enjoying downtime following his WBO European title win, and David Haye is recovering after rupturing his achilles against Tony Bellew.
Frampton confirmed in his weekly column for the Sunday Life that “I was back in London this week, back into training and as usual I felt the pain after so long away from the gym.”
“It’s good to be back and I’m just waiting for my next fight to be tied up.”
A modern and scientific trainer, Frampton is known for undergoing at least a thirteen-week fight camp, and sometimes as long as seventeen – although this length has been used to allow the Belfast man to spend Christmas with his family, something not necessary here.
This would mean that the fight would take place on Saturday July 29th at the earliest.
An announcement on opponent and confirmation of date is expected in the very near future, perhaps even the next day or two.
With many potential opponents seemingly being ruled out, and Team Frampton promising a big name, Filipino four-weight champion Nonito Donaire stands out among the list of candidates.
