Carl Frampton confirms venue for Belfast homecoming

An official announcement regarding Carl Frampton‘s next fight can be expected very, very soon.

For now though, the Belfast featherweight star has confirmed the venue for what will be his Titanic City homecoming after over two years on the road where he and The Jackal Army have taken in Manchester, New York, El Paso, and Las Vegas.

As had been expected and hoped by many, Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] will box this Summer in an outdoor extravaganza at Windsor Park in what will be the biggest fight in Ireland for over twenty years.

‘The Jackal’ has long spoken of his wish to box at the football stadium, and talk of a mega night at Windsor has increased exponentially over the past few months, with the Tigers Bay boxer making no secret of his desire to fight at the home of his beloved Northern Irish football team.

Frampton, who boxed at a purpose-built outdoor arena when he defeated Kiko Martínez for the IBF 122lbs title, finally confirmed in his weekly column for the Sunday Life that “it’s looking like late July or early August in Windsor Park.”

“It looks like we will have something set in stone within the next fortnight. The guys behind the scenes at Cyclone Promotions are working very hard to get it sorted and we’re very close.”

“I will be another big night at Windsor.”

Unfortunately though, the bout will not be a rematch with WBA 126lbs champion Leo Santa Cruz who Frampton traded wins with over the past year, defeating El Terremoto in New York last Summer before being edged out in Las Vegas in January.

While Santa Cruz has gone back on his promise of a Belfast rematch, Frampton is confident that the two will meet again in the future. The 30 year old described how “obviously I wanted it to be Leo Santa Cruz but that looks very unlikely. However, it has to happen some time because we’re standing at one-all.”

In terms of who the opponent will be, Frampton has teased that a curve-ball may be in the offing, and we should not have too long to wait to find out.
