Conrad Cummings sees chance of rematch revenge delayed

Conrad Cummings [10(4)-1(0)-1] will have to wait before he gets his chance of revenge.

The Coalisland middleweight had been due to rematch German Ronny Mittag [29(14)-2(0)-1] next Saturday [March 11th] in Cardiff.

Mittag controversially defeated Cummings back in November, taking a split decision points win and claiming the IBF Inter-Continental title. An immediate rematch for the rankings-enhancing belt was sought, and looked set to take place next week at the Motorpoint Arena on a Cyclone Promotions card televised live on Spike TV and Channel 5.

However, the headline fight for the card has fallen apart, and the Irish promotional company have made the decision to postpone the entire show.

Welshman Craig Kennedy had been due to contest the vacant British title against English champion Matty Askin in the headline bout. Blackpool’s Askin withdrew last week, and Scottish slugger Stephen Simmons was chosen as a replacement.

This decision disappointed Irish boxing fans as it overlooked Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-1(0)], who had lost to Askin (on the same night as Cummings v Mittag) in a final eliminator.

Today it was confirmed that Simmons too had withdrawn and, with no time to find a replacement, the show has been pushed back.

A refixed date has yet to be confirmed, with Cyclone describing how they are “liaising with the British Boxing Board of Control and the management of Matthew Askin to clarify when he will be ready to box Craig Kennedy for the vacant British cruiserweight title.”
