Steve Collins scores sensational Sosa win
Steve Collins Jr passed a massive test of his boxing credentials in Dublin tonight.
The Castleknock light heavy took on Argentine dangerman Pablo Sosa at the National Stadium on the Red Corner Promotions ‘Unfinished Business’ bill.
In what was his first eight rounder, Collins would dominate more than anyone could have imagined and looked far better than ever before. In the end, after a dominant display, the Celtic Warriors puncher took a wide points win.
Collins began sharply, pumping out the jab, but Sosa would look dangerous on the couple of occasions he maneuvered the Irishman to the ropes.
Sosa tried to open up in the second stanza but was timed early by Collins, who looked to have his man stunned for a spell.
The Dubliner certainly did not need to go looking for Sosa, and he picked his opportunities well in the third, countering the come-forward South American at will.
Collins, fighting inside the light heavyweight limit for the first time, was looking looser than ever before, and even indulged in some showboating in the fourth round.
Sosa started the fifth strongly, but Collins would take contol off the back of a big bodyshot that hurt the Argentine midway through the round.
The former top rugby player enjoyed his best round of the fight in the sixth, landing a number of big shots on Sosa and hurting him numerous times in the face of little resistance.
Collins continued his dominance in the seventh, his first time reaching this territory as Sosa looked increasingly weary.
A quiet eighth and final round bust into life in the last minute with both boxers trading to the delight of the crowd and Collins coming off the better.
Going to the scorecards, Collins was awarded a comprehensive 79:73 win.
Collins moves to 10(4)-0-1 following the massively impressive win, while Sosa’s record now stands at 7(3)-7(1)-3.
