Andy Lee to make ring return on Golovkin-Jacobs undercard
Andy Lee [34(24)-3(2)-1] will return to the ring after fifteen months away on March 18th.
The Limerick middleweight has not fought since losing his WBO title to Billy Joe Saunders in Manchester back in December 2015, and would take a period of time out before returning to training under Adam Booth.
Now Lee will make his comeback in New York City next month at the Madison Square Garden Arena on the huge Gennady Golovkin v Daniel Jacobs card.
Adam Booth confirmed the fight date to IFL TV.
Kazakh middleweight king Golovkin, whom Lee has previously agreed to fight, defends his WBC, WBA, and IBF titles against Brooklyn native Jacobs, and the Irishman will be keen to face the winner should he come through his own bout.
Lee has happy memories of the venue, as he sensationally knocked out John Jackson in the big room back in the Summer of 2014.
The Castleconnell southpaw joins a ram-packed undercard that also features Roman Gonzalez defending his WBC super flyweight title against Thailand’s Wisaksil Wangek, and an appearance from former 115lbs champ Carlos Cuadras.
Bray super featherweight Katie Taylor was also set to appear on the bill, but was withdrawn following protestations from Top Rank. Bob Arum’s outfit were unhappy with the Wicklow woman appearing, feeling it would divert attention from Belfast’s Mick Conlan, who makes his debut on Friday March 17th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
With Conlan headlining on the Saturday, then Lee featuring on the Saturday, it promises to be a massive weekend for Irish boxing.
