1983: Barry McGuigan claimed the vacant European featherweight title to add to his British title won earlier that year. The Clones Cyclone stopped Italian Valerio Nati with a barrage of left hooks in the sixth round of the title clash at the Kings Hall in Belfast. McGuigan would successfully defend the belt thrice before moving on to World level.

1983: On the undercard in Belfast, Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Davy Larmour fought his final fight, being stopped in the third to lose his British bantamweight title to Hartlepool’s John Feeney.
1887: Cork’s Jack McAuliffe retained his World lightweight title following an epic 74-round fight with Jem Carney at a secret location in Revere, Massachusetts. The Rebel hit the canvas thrice but the fight was ruled a draw after spectators stormed the ring.
