Connor Coyle wins on Irish debut
Connor Coyle returned home with a shutout points win at the National Stadium
The Derry prospect debuted with a knockout win in Florida last month and showed the Irish fight fans what he can do as scored a 40-36 points win over Santos Medrana on the Inception card tonight.
Coyle understandably looked at home in a ring he boxed regularly in as an amateur. The well supported Derry fighter show some of that amateur pedigree and used the jab to set up all his work, but he had that bit of pro bout and hammered right hands down the pipe.
The 2014 Commonwealth bronze medal winner looked like he could go up the gears, but only the ropes held up Medrano in the second and prevented the Foyle man from winning a 10-8 round.
The third saw the light middleweight prospect get a bit more aggressive. He backed the away fighter up and varied his work more. In came the hooks and body shots, but the veteran of 67 bouts was adept in the survival arts.
Coyle remained the aggressor in the fourth and final round and tried to force the issue, but the Spaniard again showed why he has only been stopped ten times in 52 defeats and the Derry man had to settle for a points win.
