Mexican-American Abner Mares [29(15)-2(1)-1] hopes to face the winner of the Carl Frampton v Leo Santa Cruz rematch in the near future.

The former three-weight World champion challenges for Jesus Cuellar’s WBA ‘regular’ bauble on December 10th in Los Angeles and, should he defeat the Argentinian, he wants to take on the the winner of the WBA World featherweight title fight between Frampton and Santa Cruz.

The 30 year old said “I want the winner of the Frampton vs. Santa Cruz rematch,” said Mares. “I want to continue to fight the best. I want to be known as a guy who fights the best.”

With the WBA striving to rid their organisation of the water-muddying ‘regular’ trinkets, the organisation ordering a fight between the winners of the two Stateside clashes seems quite likely.

Mares had previously expressed a willingness to take on ‘The Jackal’ following Frampton’s win over Kiko Martínez in September 2014, while he was defeated by Santa Cruz for the vacant WBA 126lbs title in August 2015.

Frampton and Santa Cruz rematch for the Belfast man’s WBA featherweight title on January 28th at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas in a repeat of this Summer’s Fight of the Year contender in New York.
