1993: Ballymena’s Eamonn Loughran outpointed (118-110, 117-112, 116-112) rangey American Lorenzo Smith to claim the vacant WBO welterweight title at the King’s Hall in Belfast. Smith, fighting on three days notice after replacing former champion Gert Bo Jacobsen, began well, using his reach, but was eventually broken down and outworked by the Ulsterman who would go on to hold the belt for two and a half years.
