The Tank begins rolling again: Timsey wins in Belfast
Ian Tims began the final chapter of his career tonight with a win.
The 36 year old Clondalkin cruiser has joined up with MGM and had his first fight in eleven months this evening on the MHD Promotions dinner show at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.
On the ‘Another Level’ card Timsey faced a familiar foe in Lithuanian Remigijus Ziausys, whom he has fought in Kerry back in 2008. Such is the stop-start nature of the injury-plagued Dubliner’s career, tonight was just his tenth fight in the eight years since that bout at the Gleneagle Hotel. By comparison, it was the Baltic journeyman’s seventieth contest since then.
The six-round contest was a war of attrition, and Tims showed little sign of ring rust as he steamrolled to a scorecards win.
The Phil Sutcliffe-trained hardman began sharply, boxing well behind the jab and bringing in the trademark Timsey bodywork whenever Ziausys tried to shell up.
Tims began to open up in the second and began to fire off volleys of shots on the Lithuanian who, to his credit, finished the round well.
Something of a slugfest broke out in the third, with Ziausys trading barrages with Tims. While the heavier punches were landed by the Irishman, and at a greater frequency, Ziausys was still finding the target with a degree of regularity.
The pace slowed slightly in the fourth, but Tims remained in some semblance of control, dictating the action and throwing some eye-catching flurries before a strong finish from his Baltic foe.
Tims moved back to the jab in the fifth, a quiet round before looking for the big finish in the sixth and final stanza where the two went toe-to-toe until the bell.
A competitive, entertaining, clash, Tims was awarded the win on a score of 60:55.
Tims record now reads 12(3)-3(1), while the always-game Ziausys drops to 20(10)-69(2)-5. The Tank is looking to build up a head of steam through a succession of bouts before moving into a big domestic clash, with Scotland’s Stephen Simmons in his sights.
