“I’ve been training like a dog” – Eight rounds no problem for Sheehan
Con Sheehan [2(0)-0] steps up to eight rounds in just his third fight this weekend, and his trainer is targeting an Irish title for his fifth fight.
While it is a bigger and quicker jump than what we are used to, the talented amateur isn’t phased by his ascent. Indeed, considering his long period of inactivity, it’s not before time for the Tipperary heavyweight.
The bypassing of a six rounder straight into an eight isn’t a problem for Sheehan, who told Irish-Boxing.com that “I’ve no worries at all about it. I’ve been training like a dog and can do a reasonably good eight rounds while unfit – so I’m sure I’ll have no problems now.””
The laid-back Munsterman therefore isn’t fearing deeper waters and wont go searching for an early knockout. He described how “I’ll be going in there, enjoying myself, and putting what I’ve learned into practice – and if the opportunity is there to take him out I’ll jump over him.”
The man in the opposite corner will be Czechian Radek Varak [3(1)-5(2)], who enters the bout off the back of an upset win last time out. Sheehan however takes no notice, and admits that he knows little of his opponent. The 27 year old explained how “I don’t really ask too much, just when I’m fighting and how many rounds and the rest will handle itself.”
“It’s all the one to me.”
If all goes to plan, in six weeks time Sheehan could be 5-0 and an Irish champion. However, the Clonmel man isn’t keen to rest on his laurels and noted how “I should be in the business end of my career now if i was getting the regular fights from the get go.”
“But it was a blessing in disguise, I’m right where i need to be now with a great team and I’m really grateful to Peter Fury for all that he’s doing for me, he’s a top man.”
